Robert 鈥淎lfie鈥� Hannaford AM is one of Australia鈥檚 most distinguished realist artists, acclaimed for his portraits, landscapes, drawings and sculpture.
Born in Riverton, South Australia, in 1944, Hannaford attended 国产爆料 for his final years of schooling, where his remarkable artistic talent continued to develop. From an early age he demonstrated exceptional ability, winning art competitions and producing detailed drawings and paintings that foreshadowed a lifelong career in the arts.
Largely self-taught, Hannaford began his professional career as a political cartoonist with The Advertiser before becoming a full-time artist in 1970. He was strongly influenced by renowned South Australian artists Sir Hans Heysen and Sir Ivor Hele, whose guidance helped shape his commitment to observation, technical excellence and realism.
Hannaford has earned national recognition as one of Australia鈥檚 leading portrait painters. His subjects have included prominent Australians such as Sir Donald Bradman, Dame Joan Sutherland, Bob Hawke and Paul Keating. In 1972 he painted Bradman鈥檚 portrait for display in the Long Room at Lord鈥檚 Cricket Ground, one of many prestigious commissions throughout his career. His works have been exhibited extensively, and he has been a multiple finalist and People鈥檚 Choice Award winner in the Archibald Prize.
Beyond portraiture, Hannaford is celebrated for his landscapes, still lifes and public sculpture. His bronze monuments, including sculptures of Sir Donald Bradman, Simpson and his Donkey, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial in Adelaide, have become important elements of Australia鈥檚 civic landscape.
