Sergeant, 10th Battalion

Died of Wounds, 7th July 1915, Gallipoli, Dardanelles, Turkey. Buried Beach Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey.

PAC Day Boy from Alberton, parent H. Adams. Became a civil servant in Largs Bay. 

Sergeant (Sgt) Douglas Bernard Matthew Adams. A civil servant from Largs Bay, SA prior to enlistment, Sergeant Adams embarked with the 4th Reinforcements, 10th Battalion from Adelaide on HMAT Port Lincoln on 1st April 1915. While serving at Gallipoli he was wounded in action and evacuated to the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station where, on 7th July 1915, aged 18, he succumbed to his wounds and was buried in the Beach Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Died of Wounds (fractured skull), Gallipoli, Turkey, 7th July 1915, aged 18 years. Corporal Reuben Weatherall, in a moving letter to his own mother, recalled, "Sergeant Douglas Adams was one of my best friends, and his death affected me so much that I have not had the heart to write to his parents." He went on to say, "I heard that poor Douglas was hit, and went across to the stretcher where he was lying ... he lived for about an hour and was buried near the beach." 

Lance Corporal, 4th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, British Army

Killed in Action, 9th May 1915, France. Commemorated Le Touret Memorial, Richebourg-l'Avoue, Bethune, Nord Pas de Calais, France.

PAC Day Boy from Adelaide, parent J. Addison. Also attended Wesley and Scotch (VIC). Became a Professional Tennis Player. Tennis player with Norman Brookes. 

Joined at outbreak and was in battle of Neuve Chapelle. Killed by a shell in the Battle of Aubers Ridge. "Jack" Addison, was well known throughout the Commonwealth as the winner of many tennis championships, some of them in partnership with Norman Brookes (OW1884). Ill-health alone prevented him attaining to Davis Cup ranks.

PAC Boarder from near the town of Colton, Elliston, South Australia, Australia, parent W. Barns. Became a farmer. 

Arthur Inkster Barns, 32nd Battalion. A farmer from Colton, South Australia, prior to enlistment he embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 12th August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat for Devonport, England. After training in England he joined his battalion on the Western Front, France, in early February 1917. Private Barns was killed in action near Albert, France, and is buried in the Bancourt British Cemetery. He was aged 20 years.

"A MISSING CORPORAL.

From R. C. Bell, Parade, Norwood:鈥� "Regarding the report in the biographical column of The Register of No. 334 Cpl. W. G. Bell, D Company, 16th Infantry, 4th Brigade, who was reported as being wounded on May 2 - the reports concerning my brother have been very conflicting, and I thought there was a possibility that some of the returned 16th would be able to enlighten us, as they were with the Western Australians. The latest information we have received is from a Miss Elliott, of Perth, and formerly of Norwood. She wrote to her brother, who was in the same company. His reply was that my brother was wounded, and that they were at the beach waiting to go aboard the hospital ships; also that my brother was sent to Malta, and he expected to see him when he returned to duty, but had since lost all trace of him. As I understand that there are many Australians in England suffering from nerves, there is a possibility of something like that having occurred to my brother, as he had a nervous breakdown in Kalgoorlie about five years ago. PAC Day Boy from Burnside, parent Edward Stone Berry. Became a motor mechanic. 

AIF records refer "discharged at own request 19th November 1915." Returned to service and was killed in action 6th August 1916.

Lieutenant, 50th Battalion

Killed in Action, 11th August 1918. Buried Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery, Bray-sur-Somme, Picardie, France.

PAC Day Boy from New Parkside, parent G. Bills. Senior Cadets. School of musketry. Became a clerk. Resided in Laura, SA. 

Lieutenant (Lt) Arthur Philip Bills, 50th Battalion from Unley, South Australia. A 21 year old clerk prior to enlisting on 15th March 1916, he embarked for overseas as a Private (service number 2856) with the 7th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 6th November 1916 aboard HMAT Afric. Following further training in England, he joined the 50th Battalion in France in May 1917. Two months later, he was back in England undergoing officer training at Cambridge where he was appointed a Second Lieutenant on 3rd November 1917. After rejoining the 50th Battalion in France later in November, he was wounded in action near Villers-Bretonneux on 6th May 1918. While undergoing medical treatment for his wounds, he was promoted to Lieutenant on 14th May 1918. He rejoined the 50th Battalion in June and was killed in action near Bray, France on 11th August 1918.

John Wesley Blacket was born in Gumeracha, South Australia, and was a Wesleyan by faith. He was a boarder at 国产爆料, his father was Rev. J. Blacket. J. W. Blacket later became a teacher and master on the staff at Princes. He had joined the staff firstly as a pupil teacher in 1906. He

was the coach of the football team in 1913鈥�14 and then captain of the university football team and wicketkeeper for the university eleven. He trained the cadets when the unit won the 1913 cadet contest.

All six of his brothers also attended the College, including Arthur Howard, Cyril Augustine, Kenneth Bernard, John Leonard, Leonard Whitefield, Maurice Newton, and Samuel Bertram Blacket.

At the age of 28, John enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 16 February 1915, with the rank of Lieutenant Adjutant in the 27th Battalion, A Company. He embarked from Adelaide on 31 May 1915 aboard HMAT A2 Geelong and served in Egypt, Gallipoli, and the Western Front. He was promoted to Captain and served with the 7th Infantry Brigade Headquarters.

Captain Blacket was mentioned in despatches for his conspicuous good work from March to June 1916. Tragically, he was killed in action on 4 July 1916 in Belgium at the age of 30. He is buried at La Plus Douve Farm Cemetery in Wallonie, Belgium, and is commemorated at the Australian War Memorial, Payneham Cemetery in South Australia ands Prince Alfed Colege. Blacket House was named after him. His brother, Lieutenant Joseph Arnold Blacket, also served in the 27th Battalion and was killed in action in France on 10 June 1918. 

Both brothers had notable careers in football before their military service during World War I. John Wesley Blacket and Joseph Arnold Blacket played football for the Norwood Football Club. John Wesley Blacket played 11 league games and scored one goal for Norwood in 1915.

Gunner Nelson Lavercomb Bowen, 120th Howitzer Battery, Australian Field Artillery who was a 34 year old accountant from Adelaide, South Australia when he enlisted on 17th January 1916. He embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 3rd October 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas. Gunner Bowen joined the 102nd Battery in France on 31st March 1917 and saw fighting in France and Belgium before being medically evacuated to England. He died of pneumonia on 16th November 1918 in the Monte Video Hospital, Weymouth, England, and was buried in the Melcombe Regis Cemetery, Weymouth.

He and a large number of other 27th battalion men are memorialised on the Australian National War Memorial at Villers- Bretonneux. Laurence was 20 years old.

Laurence Branson was born on 6 May 1896 in Greenock, South Australia. In 1907, his family moved to Wayville, Adelaide, where he completed his schooling at PAC and joined the Cadet Corps. After school, he joined the 78th Infantry and worked as a bank clerk. Laurence fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916, particularly at Gueudecourt. The harsh weather made conditions extremely difficult. He was killed in "no man's land" and his body was never able to be recovered.

In his memory, his family established the LJ Branson Prize at PAC for contributions to the school Science Journal. His loss deeply affected his parents, sister Ruby, and brothers Harrold and Vernon, who ensured his story was remembered.

A farmer of Narrogin East, Western Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Fremantle aboard HMAT Miltiades on 7th August 1916 for Plymouth, England. He joined his battalion on the Western Front, France, on 26th December 1916. Private Burkett was killed in action near Bullecourt, France, on 6th May 1917. He has no known grave and he is memorialised on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 32 years. His younger brother, 1632 Private Charles Wesley Burkett, died of wounds received in action on 16th September 1916.

Reported Killed in Action and reported missing, 20th July 1917. Died of Wounds Whilst Prisoner of War in Germany, 19th July 1916. 

19/7/1916: Lieutenant Chinner died from wounds via a shell explosion in the German Trenches at Fleurbaix, Fromelles, France, while POW. No known grave. Body not found. Commemorated on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery Memorial, Fromelles, France. In 2008, a burial ground was located at Pheasant Wood containing the bodies of 250 British and Australian soldiers including Lieutenant Chinner. All of the remains were reburied in the newly created Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery. At the time of the official dedication of the new cemetery on 19th July 2010, ninety-six of the Australians, including Lieutenant Chinner, had been identified through a combination of anthropological, archaeological, historical and DNA information. Work is continuing on identifying the other remains relocated from the burial ground and buried in the new cemetery as unknown soldiers.

Lance Corporal Lindsay Lewis Sterling Chipper and his brother, Trooper Ross Richard Vivian Chipper, were killed with the 10th Australian Light Horse at The Nek on 7th August 1915. Reported missing and later reported wounded 20/6/15. Reported Killed in Action 25th April 1918, France. Lieutenant (Lt) Ralph Elsmere Claridge, 50th Battalion from Hectorville, South Australia. A 22 year old poultry farmer prior to enlisting on 22nd August 1914, he embarked for overseas as a Private with E Company, 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 20th October 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius. While serving with the 10th Battalion at Gallipoli, he was wounded in action on 19th May 1915 and evacuated to Egypt for medical treatment. Two months later he returned to Gallipoli where he was promoted to Lance Corporal. Back in Egypt, he was promoted to Corporal, transferred to the 50th Battalion, was promoted to Sergeant and then went to France in June 1916. After being wounded in action on 16th August 1916, he was evacuated to England for medical treatment. On recovery, he attended officer training and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on 12th July 1917. Two months later he re-joined the 50th Battalion in Belgium. After being promoted to Lieutenant on 1st March 1918, he was killed in action near Villers-Bretonneux, France on 25th April 1918. Lieutenant Claridge is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux with others who have no known grave.

Officially amended to Killed in Action but originally reported as Died of wounds whilst a Prisoner of War 25th July 1916. 

Private Copley was initially reported killed in action on 20th July 1916 during the Battle of Fromelles. He was subsequently reported as wounded in action and the British Red Cross Society (Berlin Branch) records that he died of these wounds at Valenciennes, France, on 25th July 1916 while a prisoner of war in German hands. He was aged 22 years.

Brother: 34419 Gunner Charles Vivian COX, (did not attend PAC) 1st Field Artillery Brigade, returned to Australia, 20th June 1919. 

Studio portrait of 845 Private (later Corporal) John Stanley Cox, 26th Battalion, of Lambton, NSW. An orchardist prior to enlistment, he embarked on 29th June 1915 from Brisbane as a member of C Company, aboard troopship HMAT Aeneas (A60). After training in Egypt, the battalion landed at Gallipoli on 12th September. At Gallipoli, the 26th played a purely defensive role and at various times was responsible for the defence of Courtney's and Steele's Posts, and Russell's Top. It withdrew from the peninsula on 12th December.

After another stint in Egypt, the 7th Brigade proceeded to France as part of the 2nd Australian Division in March 1916. In concert with the 28th Battalion, the 26th mounted the first trench raid undertaken by Australian troops on the Western Front on 6th June. The Battalion fought in its first major battle around Pozi猫res between 28th July and 7th August. After a short spell in Belgium, the 2nd Division came south in October to attack again in the Somme Valley. The 26th Battalion took part in two attacks to the east of Flers, both of which floundered in mud and slush. It was during one of these attacks that Corporal Cox was killed in action on 5th November 1916. He was aged 28 years; image appeared in the Chronicle.

THE LATE SENIOR FLIGHT LIEUTENANT DAVEY.

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Davey have received a cablegram from the Admiralty stating that their son, Senior Flight Lieutenant Reginald Argyle Davey, has been drowned in the North Sea. He was 19 years of age, and shortly after leaving 国产爆料, where he was educated, he proceeded to England and received a commission in the Royal Flying Corps. Since then he had seen 15 months of active service, and he was promoted to senior flight lieutenant, a rank next to that of commander, while serving in the Dardanelles. His career was brief but brilliant.

PAC Day Boy from Hutt St, Adelaide, parent Dr. E. H. Davies. Captain of Sports Team 1913-1914, Prefect 1913-1914. Became a teacher. "Joined PAC Staff from 1915 - Enlisted May 1915 in A.M.C - Transferred in Egypt to 27th Battalion with which he went to France. Received the Military Medal- Was mentioned in dispatches for conspicuous bravery in helping wounded comrades under fire whilst wounded in trenches - was later reported killed in action" from enrollment card verso, listed in Ward p.223.

Lance Corporal G. C. Davies, the second son of Dr. E. Harold Davies, has been killed in action. He was educated at Prince Alfred College, where he had a successful career, both in the classroom and in the sports field. As a schoolboy he exercised an exceptionally good influence among his fellows; he was in the forefront of every activity for the good of his school, and showed unusual qualities as a leader. He was a prefect, captain of the sports' team in 1912-13-14, College Cup winner in 1912, champion gymnast in 1913, and played in the football team in 1914. At the beginning of 1915 he joined the staff at P.A.C. His frank, manly bearing, enabled him to establish himself at once as a teacher of great promise. At the end of the first term he joined the Army Medical Corps, with which he went to Egypt. After he had served for some time with the troops guarding the Suez Canal, Capt. Blake was instrumental in getting him transferred to the 27th Battalion. In a letter recently received by one of his former pupils he hinted at the probability of his being engaged in work involving great risk. The details of the events that led to his being mentioned in despatches for conspicuous bravery in helping wounded comrades under fire reveal the nature of this work and the splendid courage with which he faced it.

He was killed in action at Messines, Belgium, on 20th February 1918 and is buried at Messines Ridge British Cemetery.

Private, 32nd Battalion

Died of Wounds received in Action, France near Amiens, 24th June 1918. Buried Crouy British Cemetery (Plot III, Row C, Grave No. 2), Crouy-Sur-Somme, France.

Private (Pte) Geoffrey Bury Dewhirst, 32nd Battalion. A bank clerk from Penola, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 14th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 22nd December 1917 aboard HMAT Ulysses for Egypt. The reinforcements then travelled by sea to Taranto, Italy, then via rail to Cherbourg, France, before crossing The Channel to Southampton, England. After training with the 14th Training Battalion he joined the 32nd Battalion on the Western Front near Corbie, France, in late May 1918. Private Dewhirst was wounded in action near Corbie on 24th June 1918 and died of these wounds the same day. He is buried in the Crouy British Cemetery, Crouy-sur-Somme, France. He was aged 21 years. 

His older brother, 723 Air Mechanic Grade 2 Edward Bertram Dewhirst, 3 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps, died of wounds received in action on 23rd March 1918, aged 28years. His eldest brother, 4145 Private James Hay Dewhirst, 12th Battalion, enlisted in August 1915 and returned to Australia for discharge, medically unfit due to illness, on 3rd November 1917. Other brothers did not attend PAC.

"Bombardier SYDNEY FRED FOWLER, who was killed in action in France on March 31, was the third son of the late Mr. W. H. M. and Mrs. P. A. Fowler, of Angas-street. He attended the Flinders-street, Sturt-street, and Adelaide High Schools, and spent three years at 国产爆料. He then joined the Irrigation Department as a survey cadet, but was only employed in this capacity a few months before enlisting at the age of 18. He left Australia as a signaller, in the 3rd Light Horse Regiment, but was transferred to the Divisional Artillery Column. About six months prior to his death he was again transferred to the 41st Battery of the 11th Australian Field Artillery Brigade. He was greatly loved, because of his cheerful disposition and his generous actions."

Henry Kenneth Fry (1886-1959), anthropologist and medical practitioner, was born on 25th May 1886 in North Adelaide, fourth child of Henry Thomas Fry (d.1899), warehouseman, and his wife Margaret Hannah, n茅e Phillips. Kenneth was educated at 国产爆料 and the University of Adelaide (B.Sc., 1905; M.B., B.S., 1908; M.D., 1934); as South Australian Rhodes scholar for 1909, he proceeded to Balliol College, Oxford, where in 1912 he obtained another B.Sc. and diplomas in public health and anthropology. Next year he succeeded Herbert Basedow as chief medical inspector of Aborigines, based in Darwin.

Member of the Adelaide Rowing Club. Diagnosed with Dysentery and later severe colitis. Hospitalised and later sent back to Australia as Invalid. Also sufferred severe Neurasthemia. Ultimately died of Meningitis in Adelaide, 1917.

Lieutenant (Lt) Hubert Leslie Fry, Australian Light Horse, who was a 33 year old merchant from Brighton, Victoria, formerly from Norwood, South Australia, when he enlisted on 16th December 1914. He was appointed a Second Lieutenant and embarked for overseas with the 8th Light Horse Regiment from Melbourne on 25th February 1915 aboard HMAT Star of Victoria. While serving at Gallipoli, he took ill, was evacuated to hospital and eventually returned to Australia on 14th January 1916. Seven months later he was medically discharged and then died on 10th October 1917.

Sergeant (Sgt) John Langsford Glasson, 50th Battalion. A surveyor from Kadina, South Australia, prior to enlistment as a Private (Pte) in the 10th Battalion, he embarked with the 13th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 11th January 1916 aboard HMAT Borda for Suez. Shortly after arrival he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, in early June 1916. Private Glasson was wounded in action near Albert, France, and was evacuated to England for treatment, rehabilitation and furlough before rejoining his unit in mid-May 1917. Shortly afterwards he was appointed Lance Corporal and six weeks later promoted to Corporal and attached to the 13th Training Battalion in England for the remainder of the year. He then rejoined the 50th Battalion near Peronne which was followed by promotion to Temporary Sergeant in mid-February 1918. Sergeant Glasson was killed in action near Dernancourt, France, on 5th April 1918 and is buried in the Ribemont Communal Cemetery Extension. He was aged 22 years. 

His younger brother, 14995 Private A Glasson, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, 7th Battalion, was killed in action near Fleurbaix, France, on 13th October 1915. Commemorated on Kadina Memorial High School Roll of Honour, South Australia.

Was popular at school and was the first PAC boy to arrive at the front - also first from that church community.

Killed in Action, 19th July 1916, France. Had earlier survived an air crash and was found unconscious but later died on arrival at hospital near Noeux Les Mines, 19th July 1916.

Following an illness recovered in Malta and was formally discharged from the AIF on the 27th of December - just one day later commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps (RFC.)
His commanding officer wrote of the incident of his death, 鈥淟ieutenant Godlee fell in our lines and was alive, although unconscious, when picked up, but died immediately on arrival at hospital. He died bravely for his country, and even on the morning that he met his death had done good work. His death leaves a gap in our squadron; in fact, in the Flying Corps, which will be hard to replace, for he was a most gallant and capable officer.鈥� See award winning entry for Spirit of Anzac Prize on Goddlee by Archie McEwen 2020 (PAC yr 9) located in GODLEE project folder. From Aviation Museum - John GODLEE was born in St Peters and attended 国产爆料 where he served in the Cadets Corps. After finishing school he was employed as a stockman before he enlisted aged 22 at Guilford in WA on 21 October 1914. He embarked from Freemantle as a Trooper in the 10th Light Horse Regiment (3rd Light Horse Brigade) aboard HMAT A47 Mashobra on 8th February 1915. After a period of training in Egypt he sailed from Alexandria to Gallipoli on 16 May and served there gaining a promotion to Corporal until he fell ill with enteric fever and was evacuated to hospital on Malta on 19th August 1915.

Godlee was transferred to England from Malta aboard HS Fanconia on 28th August 1915 and admitted to No 4 London General Hospital at Denmark Hill on 9th September 1915. Upon recovery he was given his discharge from the AIF on 27th December 1915. He was issued with the 1914-1915 Star recognising his service in the Dardanelles Campaign. On 28th December 1915 he was granted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps. He trained at Gasport gaining his RAeC Certificate on 20th February 1916 and graduated as as 2nd Lieutenant Flying Officer before being posted to No. 32 Squadron RFC in France.

On 15th July 1916, whilst flying a DH2 6006 Godlee destroyed an enemy biplane for his first victory. Four days later on 19th July, he was mortally wounded during combat with a Fokker EIII which he sent down out of control. He is recorded on the Australian War Memorial Commemorative Roll as Killed in Action on 19th July 1916, aged 24 years.

A bank clerk from Rose Park, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 15th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 20th November 1915 for Suez. In mid-May he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, in June 1916. Private Harvie was initially reported as wounded in action near Bapaume on 19th November 1916 and was subsequently confirmed as killed in action on that day. He is buried in the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, France. He was aged 29 years.

With ill health he moved to Renmark from where he enlisted in 12th battalion AIF ... until he transferred in Egypt to a machine gun company (13th) fighting for nearly 2 years along the Belgium and French fronts continually mentioning meeting old acquaintances in his letters home...

Corporal (Cpl) Albert Ernest (Bert) Lock, 120th Howitzer Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, of Bridgewater, SA. A clerk with civil engineering training prior to enlistment, Corporal Lock embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Aeneas on 3rd October 1916. After being promoted to the rank of sergeant he died of wounds on 9th October 1917, aged 30, at Passchendaele, Belgium. After the war, the town of Lock, SA, was named after Sergeant Lock who had been an officer of the Land Office, Department of Lands, SA. It is the only town in SA named after WW1 fallen.

Parents: David Joseph and Emma MCNAMARA, 11 Arthur Street, Medindie, South Australia. Originally from Bordertown. At School, he was academic and won the Cotton Medal, the Old Collegians Scholarship and the Angas Engineering Scholarship. 

Later awarded the Military Medal 'For most efficient work and devotion to duty. On 14th March, 1917, at GREVILLERS he personally installed a power buzzer in that village when it was under constant shell fire. On 25th March, 1917, in connection with the attack on LAGNICOURT by the 7th Australian Infantry Brigade, he was the operator who attempted to establish wireless communication with the front line. This Sapper has done excellent work in the field since last November, from the first he was a volunteer for carrying a power buzzer forward in an advance, but as no opportunity occurred he was usually managed to be in the most dangerous corners with either a power buzzer amplifier or listening post.'

Gunner Cedric James William Mowat was born in 1890, the son of Willliam Cormack MOWAT and Annie Elizabeth Barnes. He was the eldest of two sons. While his father died a few years after he was born his mother remarried George STRACHAN when Cedric was 11 years old. Another brother was born in 1902. 

Cedric's brother, Gunner Reginald Henry MOWAT (PAC 1906-1907) enlisted in 1916 in the Fifth Divisional Ammunition Column.

"While the men were getting their wind, my attention was drawn to a wounded man alongside of me just along a dugout. It was Ray 鈥� He was quite conscious and by his appearance didn鈥檛 seem to be hit too badly 鈥� I managed to get him a flask of whisky 鈥� and a mouthful of that seemed to make his spirits go up 鈥� I asked a 32nd fellow 鈥� to do his best for Ray while he could. I then made my way down to find a position for my gun.." Corporal Theodor Pflaum, 8th Machine Gun Company, 19th July 1916. 

Private Raymond Pflaum of the 32nd Battalion was killed at Fromelles. His brother, Theodor, found him wounded on the battlefield but could not stop long enough to help him. Raymond died of his wounds later that day. His body was not recovered until 2010, when his remains were found during the excavation of a mass grave at Pheasant Wood.

Born Manchester, England. PAC Day Boy, brother of RAWS, Robert Goldthorpe (PAC 1900-1902). 1901 PAC Captain of Cricket XI. Father Rev. J.G. Raws. Became a journalist in Melbourne. 

Upon enlistment:
Parents: John and Mary RAWS, 76 Cheltenham Street, Malvern, South Australia. 

Lieutenant Raws enlisted in July 1915 and embarked with the 22nd Battalion, 11th Reinforcements, as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was promoted to Lieutenant shortly after his arrival in Egypt in 1916 and transferred to his brother's, Lieutenant Robert Goldthorpe "Goldy" Raws, unit the 23rd Battalion. He transferred to France late May 1916 and joined his unit in Armentieres. Lieutenant Raws was killed in action at Pozieres on 23rd August 1916. It is estimated that the 23rd Battalion lost almost 90 per cent of its original members during this battle.

Throughout his service, Lieutenant Raws wrote letters to his family at home. Although not in the fighting for long, Lieutenant Raws' letters provide some of the most graphic descriptions of the battle at Pozieres. His letters are held by the Australian War Memorial at Accession Number 2DRL/0481.

Upon enlistment:

Private Roach was wounded in action on 25th April 1915 at Gallipoli, however, he returned to the unit soon after. He was transferred to the 3rd Machine Gun Company in March 1916 and was promoted to Lance Corporal in August of that year. He was further promoted to Lieutenant on 25th November 1917. Lieutenant Roach was killed in action on 10th August 1918. 

In a letter to the Base Record Office in Melbourne in 1922, his father quotes Euripides when discussing his son's "glorious end" - "Who knows but life be that which men call death, and death what men call life".

Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Frank Milton Rowell, 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment. A civil servant from Lockleys, SA prior to enlistment, Lieutenant Colonel Rowell had previously served with distinction during the Boer War and embarked as the Commanding Officer from Adelaide on HMAT Port Lincoln on 22nd October 1914. Whilst serving at Gallipoli, he became ill, but continued to serve until he was evacuated to HMHS Gloucester Castle suffering from acute peritonitis. On 8th August 1915, aged 39, he died and was buried at sea.

PAC Day Boy from Malvern. Attended University of Adelaide and Edinburgh University. Became a Doctor/Medical Practicioner (MC FRCS(Ed) LRCP). His father Joseph Craig Shierlaw owned 鈥楽heirlaw and Co.鈥� which was a Tailors, Clothiers, Outfitters and Hatters business in Hindley Street Adelaide (resided 52 Eaton St, Malvern, SA). 

Shierlaw was attached as MO to the 1st Anzac entrenching Battalion at Etaples on the 11th June 1916 and remained with them until a posting to the Australian 4th Field Ambulance and then to the 13th Battalion as RMO in August 1916. He died of wounds received in action on the 11th April 1916 and was buried in the Australian Dressing Station Cemetery. He was re-interned to the British Cemetery in 1929, 陆 mile SW of the Vaulx-Vraucourt Corps British Cemetery, France Plot 2, Row B, Grave 13 , 3 miles NE of Bapaume. He was awarded the Military Cross posthumously on 22nd February 1917.

Upon enlistment:

A station hand from North Adelaide, South Australia, prior to enlistment in the 8th Reinforcements, he embarked from Adelaide on 12th August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat for Devonport, England. Following training in England he joined his battalion on the Western Front, near Fricourt, France in early February 1917. Private Simpson was wounded in action near Morlancourt, France, on 29th July 1918, he died of these wounds 3 days later (invalided to 20th Casualty Clearing Station) and is buried in the Vignacourt British Cemetery. He was aged 23 years.

From 1911-1914 attended Adelaide University - Law. Articled to Messrs Webb & Kelly. Adelaide University Rowing Club, Adelaide University Football Club. Wounded in Malta. Served Gallipoli. Rose to Sergeant. Killed in Action at Merris, France on 30th July 1918 and is buried at Villers-Bretonneux, France.

He was later commissioned as a Lieutenant and was wounded in France and died on 18th August 1918. Lieutenant (Lt) Lyell Keith Swann, Australian Flying Corps (AFC), of Keyneton, SA. A bank clerk prior to enlistment, he was assigned the rank of Private and embarked from Adelaide with the 3rd Reinforcements, 43rd Battalion aboard HMAT Anchises on 28th August 1916. Later transferring to the 40th Battalion, Swann rose through the ranks to become a Sergeant (Sgt) by November 1916. While serving in France, Sergeant Swann was awarded the Military Medal on 16th August 1917. In January 1918 he was selected for training as a pilot with the AFC, joining the No. 1 Royal Flying Corps training school at Reading, England. He graduated on 30th July 1918 as a Flying Officer. While attached to No. 4 Squadron AFC, Lieutenant Swann was taking off with a flight patrol on 14th November 1918 when his aircraft was seen to spin at about 300 feet and crash to the ground. He was taken to the 63rd Casualty Clearing Station, where he was found to have sustained serious injuries to his lower body and skull. Following an operation, his condition failed to improve and he died at 9.40 pm the same day, aged 23. He was buried at Ascq Communal Cemetery, France.

Died 9 pm on the 25th April, 1918 at 1st Southern General Hospital, Stourbridge Section, Birmingham, West Midlands, England from wounds - Shell Gas Poisoning (was classed as wounded in action).

Father: Mr Thomas, 11 North Road, Elsternwick, Victoria. Son of Josiah Thomas, Member of the House of Representatives and later a Senator and a member of the Hughes cabinet.  

From 1910, he attended Wesley College . 

Died 31st July 1916 of wounds incurred on 27th July 1916. Unit was badly hit by enemy shelling. Three "crimes" on file including Absent Without Leave.

PAC Boarder from Western Australia, 1902 Captain First XVIII Football. One of three brothers attending PAC together (Hugo, Harry and Frank Eric Throssell). C of E. Became a farmer. 

Served for 6.6 years as Trooper, 18th Australian Light Horse; 4 months as Sergeant, 10th Australian Light Horse; Six years service with the 18th and 10th Regiments of the Militia. 

Victoria Cross 'For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty during operations on the Kaiakij Aghala (Hill 60) in the Gallipoli Peninsula, 29th and 30th August, 1915. Although severely wounded in several places during a counter attack, he refused to leave his post or to obtain medical assistance till all danger was past, when he had his wounds dressed and returned to the firing line until ordered out of action by the medical officer. By his personal courage and example he kept up the spirits of his party, and was largely instrumental in saving the situation at a critical period.' Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Suffolk', 4th September 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 17th October 1918; discharged (appointment terminated), Perth, 13th February 1919. Married Katherine Susannah PRITCHARD, 28th January 1919. Committed suicide, 19th November 1933, "in a fit of melancholy ascribed by friends to an attack of meningitis." Imagining that he could better provide for his wife and 11-year-old son if he left them a war service pension, he shot himself on 19th November 1933 at Greenmount. Friends blamed his melancholy on an attack of meningitis at Gallipoli and saw it as the cause of his suicide. He was buried with full military honours in the Anglican section of Karrakatta cemetery, Perth.

2nd Lieutenant, 32nd Australian Infantry Battalion

Killed in Action, 20th September 1917, Polygon Wood, Ypres, Belgium. Buried Buttes New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood.

PAC Boarder from Riverton, SA. Methodist. Born Broken Hill. Father Rev. J. Watts. Became a clerk.

Upon enlistment:
Mother: Mrs. Sarah Mary Watts, Prospect Road, Prospect, South Australia.

A clerk from Prospect, South Australia, prior to enlistment in the 32nd Battalion, he embarked as the Orderly Room Sergeant of A Company from Adelaide on 18th November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong for Suez. On 30th January 1916, he reverted to the rank of Corporal at his own request but was appointed Lance Sergeant (L Sgt) four months later. The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Lance Sergeant Watts was promoted to Sergeant (Sgt) on 3rd September 1916. In November 1916, he was transferred to No 6 Officer Cadet Battalion, Oxford, England from where he graduated as Second Lieutenant at the beginning of March 1917. On returning to France he was transferred to the 28th Battalion near Bapaume and then attended five weeks instruction on sniping and musketry. 2nd Lieutenant Watts was killed in action at Polygon Wood, Belgium, on 20th September 1917. He was aged 25 years.

Died 15th February 1946 (natural causes).

Private Richard Leonard Williams, 27th Battalion, of Henley Beach, SA. A station hand in Auburn, SA prior to enlisting in February 1916, Private Williams embarked from Adelaide with the 12th Reinforcements on board HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 11th April 1916. He was killed in action in France on 5th November 1916. Private Williams was 21 years of age.
