Robert Harvey Annells was born in Kadina 25th May 1916 and attended PAC as a day boy from 1930-1932, from Parkside. He became a Bank Clerk - Union Bank of Australia Ltd. Flying Officer No. 14 Squadron (RAF).

Killed in Action (flying battle) 21st February 1943, over the Agean Sea. Marauder FK377 of 14 Squadron RAF crashed into the Aegean Sea near the Greek Islands with all crew killed.

Died as a prisoner of the Japanese at Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, 29th April 1945. Commemorated Labuan Memorial, Labuan, Malaysia.

SA. Paybook photograph, taken on enlistment, of NX65429 Sergeant George William Bundey, Headquarters 8th Division, Australian Imperial Force. He was one of over 2000 Allied prisoners of war (POW) held in the Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, having been transferred there from Singapore as a part of B Force. The 1494 POW's that made up B Force, were transported from Changi on 7th July 1942 on board the tramp ship Ubi Maru, arriving in Sandakan Harbour on 18th July 1942. Sergeant Bundey, aged 28, died as a prisoner of the Japanese on 29th April 1945. He was the son of Frederick Leslie and Jeannie Eva Bundey, of Toorak Gardens, SA. Son of James and Marjorie Wilmot Butchart, of Mitcham, South Australia. Buried Brookwood Military Cemetery, Pirbright, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. Commemorated Adelaide WW2 Wall of Remembrance, Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour, and 国产爆料 Honour Roll. The Advertiser (Adelaide) Sat 14 Jul 1945 reported -

Advice has been received by Mr. and Mrs. James Butchart, of East parade, Mitcham, of the death of their elder son, W.O. Bruce Ferguson Butchart, 20, on July 5 as a result of accidental drowning. Before enlisting in the RAAF in January, 1943, W.O. Butchart was employed on the staff of Annells, Tilley, Wiltshire, Hunwick & Co. He was educated at Mitcham Public School and 国产爆料, and was a member of the Sturt Tennis Club. He was buried with service honors on July 12 at Brookwood Regional Cemetery, England. His only brother, Colin Thomas Butchart, is a sergeant in the RAAF.

Served in the Great War in France and England as Lance Sergeant in the 43rd Battalion, he was discharged medically unfit on 20th September 1918.

He was appointed as a Representative (with Officer status) in the Australian Red Cross Society (Service No. 123) in September 1941. He was aboard the Hospital Ship 'Centaur' when it was sunk by a torpedo fired from a Japanese submarine. He was 51 years of age and the son of Euphemia (nee Martin) and Matthew Symonds Clark. He left a widow, Una Lithgow Clark [nee Wylde] and she died in 1958.

COWAN, Warren Frank

Died age 31

Warren Frank Cowan MG was born 12th May 1911. He was a 国产爆料 Day Boarder from Angaston, 1921 to 1928. He served as a Pilot Officer, No. 32 Squadron, Royal Australian Airforce during World War II and played a crucial role in halting Japan's plans to invade Australia. On July 22, 1942, Cowan's targeted bombing of Buna in Papua New Guinea destroyed Japanese supplies, significantly impacting the war in the Pacific.

In a subsequent battle, Cowan and his crew of Lockheed Hudson A16-201 engaged nine Japanese Zero fighters, showcasing exceptional aerial skill. Although they were ultimately killed on this day, their actions earned the respect of their adversaries. Cowan was posthumously awarded the Medal of Gallantry, Australia's highest bravery award, 82 years later. Cowan MG is commemorated, Port Moresby (Bomana) War Cemetery, Bomana, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea and the 国产爆料 Honour Roll.

CRAIG, William Gordon

William Gordon Craig (Service Number 416549), a Flying Officer and Flight Lieutenant, was killed in an aircraft accident on April 8, 1945, in Finningley, Yorkshire, UK. He is buried in Darlington West Cemetery, Durham, England.

Craig attended 国产爆料 from 1934 to 1938 and was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Crapp of Prospect. He enlisted in 1941 and served in England for over two years, completing more than forty flights over enemy territory as a Halifax pilot. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his gallant services.

He is commemorated on the Adelaide WW2 Wall of Remembrance, the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour, the International Bomber Command Centre Memorial, and the 国产爆料 Honour Roll. He left behind a widow, Olive Swainston, of Darlington, England.

John Furness was born in South Australia. Attended PAC and passed leaving honours 16th on honours list. Attended Adelaide University (B.A.). He was working as a Librarian at the Adelaide University Law Library. He initially enlisted in the Army (CMF) before transferring to the RAAF. John trained as a General Duties Navigator in Australia, Canada and the UK before joining No. 15 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force on Lancasters.

His aircraft (Lancaster HK626) was struck by flack over Oberhausen Germany. All crew members were killed.

28891 Sergeant (Sgt) Ronald Thomas Hand who was a 23 year old salesman from North Unley, South Australia when he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) on 12th March 1941. He was serving with 31 Squadron RAAF and was a crew member of Bristol Beaufighter A19-22 when it reported engine trouble on a flight over the Timor Sea on 23rd December 1942. Sergeant Hand is presumed to have died on that day and is commemorated on the Northern Territory Memorial at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, Northern Territory, Australia along with the names of others who have no known grave.

Flying-Officer GEOFFREY HASSELL, aged 20 years, only son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Hassell, of Opey Avenue, Hyde Park, is missing, and presumed to have lost his life in air operations over the Norwegian Coast on 5th April, 1945. He was a pilot attached to an R.A.A.F. Beau-fighter Squadron of Coastal Command. He was educated at the School 1935-1941 (School Reg. No. 7304), and was a member of this Association. Prior to enlisting in January, 1943, he was on the staff of the Commonwealth Bank, Adelaide. He left for overseas in April, 1944.

Hawke, formerly of Jamestown and now at the Nailsworth Branch of the Savings Bank, have been informed that their son. Leading Seaman Allan R. L. Hawke, died of illness in Japan. Hawke was on H.M.A.S. Perth when it was lost. He attended Jamestown High School and 国产爆料 and later was on the staff of the Adelaide Steamship Company Ltd., when he enlisted. During 1944 a letter came to his parents from their son which encouraged the hope that he would return. Hawke was the only son.

On 30th October, the 2/4th was sent by barge to reinforce the 20th Brigade at Finschhafen, New Guinea in the clearing of the Huon Peninsula. During a patrol on 23rd December 1943, Lieutenant Hoad was Killed in Action, aged 22.

LEAK, Weston Hugh

Weston Hugh Leak (Service Number: SX4866) was born 23rd December 1917, in Adelaide, SA. His father, Llewellyn, was killed in France in 1918, leaving Weston to grow up without knowing him. Weston Attended PAC 1931-1933. Legacy played a significant role in his life. Weston enlisted in Adelaide and served in the Second World War in the Middle East and New Guinea, where he suffered from malaria and other tropical illnesses. He was a pharmacist and a member of the 2/6 Field Ambulance. His death in 1996 was partly attributed to the long-term effects of his wartime service.

As an only child, Weston was raised by his mother, Stella Leak, who did not remarry. He married Valerie Bitmeade, and they had six children. Weston was a devoted father and a top South Australian tennis player, coached by Harry Hopman before the war. He prioritised his children's education, ensuring they could play tennis and swim well, skills he deemed essential for post-war life in Australia.

LETCHER, Robert John

Robert John Letcher, born 17th November 1918, in Semaphore, SA, was a PAC boarder from Kapunda 1933-1935. He enlisted in Adelaide and served as a Flight Sergeant (Service Number: 416437) in the RAAF. On January 22, 1944, aged 25 he tragically lost his life in an aircraft accident in Weston Zoyland, Somerset, UK, while navigating a Wellington X LN 667 on a non-operational flight. He had served eight months in England.

Robert was the eldest son of Thorold Roy and Doris Phoebe Letcher of Adelaide. Before enlisting, he worked at the Vacuum Oil Company in Adelaide. His younger brothers also served in the military: Sgt. L. E. Letcher as a wireless-air gunner in the RAAF in England, and Gnr. D. R. Letcher with the AIF in New Guinea.

PILOT OFFICER STUART LINDSAY LLOYD (LOST ON OPERATIONS OVER NEW GUINEA ON 16 MARCH 1945). War.- Officer aged 34 years, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Lloyd, of Mount Gambier has been reported missing and believed to have been killed during strafing operations in a Beaumont bomber in the South-West Pacific whilst on service with the R.A.A.F. He has served nearly four years with the R.A.A.F., and has had over 800 flying hours. He attended the school 1924-1926.
(School Reg. No. 6076), and was a Life Member of this Association (No. 700), and at the time of enlistment was on the staff of the National Bank. He has left a widow and one son.

Born in Kooringa Burra 15^th September 1917, Keith McBride attended 国产爆料 1927-1935. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1940 and served in the 450 Squadron where he achieved the rank of Sergeant-Pilot.

Keith McBride was killed in action during World War II, whilst flying a Kittyhawk aircraft over Gambut Libya, on 23^rdFebruary 1942. Aged 24 years. He is buried in the Tobruk War Cemetery, Libya.

Keith McBride remembered his old school in his will with a bequest to help establish a chapel at the College.

Robert Carl Muecke, born 11th April 1918, in Adelaide, SA, was a PAC day boy 1931-1934 from Knightsbridge who became a mercantile clerk. He enlisted in Laverton, VIC, with Service Number 283858. As a Flying Officer, he served on Hudson A16-234 and tragically lost his life on 30th July 1942, aged 24 near Kai Island, Arafura Sea, along with crew members Frank Stanley Moss (Pilot Officer, Service Number 401991), Lloyd Miners (Pilot Officer, Service Number 405797), and James Edward Laman (Sergeant, Service Number 405794). His next of kin was Emil Muecke.

Pilot-Officer RONALD LAING NICHOLSON, aged 23 years, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Nicholson, of Pt. Augusta, previously reported as missing as a result of air operations over France on 10th June, 1944, is now known to have lost his life on that date. He was buried at Elancourt Cemetery, and later reburied at Viroflay New Communal Cemetery. Before enlistment he was on the clerical staff of the Commonwealth Railways. He left for overseas in April, 1943, and was pilot and captain of a Lancaster bomber attached to No. 460 Squadron. He attended the School 1937-1938 (School Reg. No. 7463).

Colin Albert Peak, born in Burra, SA, was a PAC day boy from Tusmore Gardens. He was the youngest son of Mrs. R. B. Peak and the late Mr. W. A. H. Peak. Colin enlisted in 1941 and served as a Pilot Officer (Service Number: 417110) in the R.A.F. Squadron. He piloted a Lancaster bomber (DV 198) and was reported missing over St Pierre des Corps, France, on April 11, 1944, later presumed dead. He gained his wings in Canada in 1942 and arrived in England in February 1943. Colin attended PAC from 1935 to 1938 and worked at W. D. & H. O. Wills before enlisting. His descendant, Liam Peak, attended PAC and proudly bore the cross for CA Peak during the inaugural Field of Remembrance Anzac Service in 2024.

William Shannon PEAKE was born on 14th September, 1917 at Naracoorte in South Australia.

His parents were Edward John PEAKE and Alison Vera Bartlett SHANNON.

He was working as a Shipping Clerk in the Adelaide Steamship Company before enlisting in the Royal Australian Air Force on 21st July, 1941 in Adelaide, SA - he trained at Victor Harbor, Parafield & Mallala and gained his commission as a Pilot Officer - he was then transferred to Sydney.

He had previous service for 12 months in the Militia in the 51st Battery, 13th Field Brigade.

William died on 17th May, 1942 after falling from the Brisbane Express & was found by a fettler in a tunnel about 3 miles south of Coffs Harbour - his death was due to a fractured skull & a broken neck.

His body was sent back to Sydney by train and cremated at Rookwood Crematorium in Sydney - his family conducted a burial service for him at Mitcham General Cemetery in South Australia where he has a memorial plaque.

His name is memorialized on the Australian War Memorial & the Roll of Honour in Port Lincoln, South Australia.

Pilot Office, William Shannon Peake whose death in tragic circumstances was recorded recently, was a son of Mr. & Mrs. E.J. Peake of Mount Gambier and a grandson of the late E.R. Peake, an old resident of the Naracoorte District.

He was 24 years of age and was born at Naracoorte in 1917. He attended the primary schools at Beachport at Naracoorte and Mount Gambier and completed his education at the Port Lincoln High School & 国产爆料.

He was prominent in athletic circles, being a member of the Sturt & Keswick & Wayville Tennis Clubs and a member of the team which won the A grade pennant in 1940.

He also won the Eyre Peninsula Junior Tennis Championship and played football in the amateur league, and cricket in the Adelaide Turf Association with the Prince Alfred Old Collegians.

He met his death accidentally whilst on his journey by rail to a Northern Area Base.

It is believed that his death was due to injuries sustained as a result of a train mishap. Pilot Officer Peake was well known at Port Lincoln & his father held the position of station master for a number of years.

He was highly regarded by all who knew him and was particularly prominent in sporting circles.

John Harold Rowell, born 16th April 1915 in Lockleys, SA, was the son of Harold Rowell and Elsie Hammer. He became a contractor then enlisted in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force on 13 January 1943 and served in the 2/32nd Australian Infantry Battalion, 9th Division.

Fought in Tobruk and El Alamein before being deployed to New Guinea in 1943. He was killed in action 26th November 1943 near Finschhafen and is commemorated at the Lae War Cemetery in Papua New Guinea and the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

Private Murray Orme Sherman, 8th Division Ammunition Sub-Park, Australian Army Service Corps. He was one of over 2000 Allied prisoners of war (POW) held in the Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, having been transferred there from Singapore as a part of E Force. The 500 Australian and 500 British POW's who made up E Force, left Changi on 28th March 1943, on board the S.S. De Klerk arriving at Berhala Island (adjacent to Sandakan Harbour) on 15th April 1943. The POW's were held there until 5 June, when they were taken by barge to Sandakan. The next day they were transferred to the 8 Mile Camp, which was about half a mile from the B Force compound. Private Sherman, aged 26, died as a prisoner of the Japanese on 16th March 1945. He was the son of Charles Henry and Margaret Sherman, and the husband of Gertrude Eileen Mary Sherman, of Glenelg, SA. He is commemorated on the Labuan Memorial Panel 24.

Keith William Slade, born 14th June 1918 in Adelaide, SA, was not a student but served as a teacher at 国产爆料 from 1939 to 1940 and later at King's College (now Pembroke School). During World War II, he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) with the service number 41152 and achieved the rank of Flight Lieutenant Pilot.

After the war, Keith returned to Australia and in 1953 became a Public Relations officer for the RAAF. He also pursued a career in journalism, showcasing his versatility and dedication to service both in and out of uniform.

Victor (Vic) Treloar, born 2nd January 1913 in Redhill, SA, trained with the 9th Light Horse Regiment before enlisting in the RAAF on 31 March 1941. He married Florence Joan Horne and served in various training schools and operational units.

During WWII, Vic's 2 Squadron conducted missions against Japanese targets. On 14 September 1942, his Lockheed Hudson bomber was shot down in Saumlaki Bay, resulting in the death of all crew members. Vic, aged 29, left behind a widow and three children. He is commemorated at the Ambon Memorial in Indonesia.

Allan Oliver Walkington, born 26th July 1921 in Terowie, SA. He was a Boarder at PAC 1935-1936. He enlisted in Adelaide and served as a Warrant Officer in the RAAF's 194 Squadron. On 20th June 1945, he was killed when Dakota KK175 crashed on Ramree Island, Burma, due to poor weather. The crash also claimed the lives of Flying Officer Neelands, Wing Commander Crawford, and Flight Lieutenant Forrester. Allan is commemorated at the Taukkyan War Cemetery in Myanmar.

Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Malcolm George Western, 576 Squadron RAF, of Marion, SA. Flight Sergeant Western, aged 20, was the air gunner on Lancaster bomber DV342, radio call sign: UL-62. The entire crew of DV432 died on the night of 16th December 1943 when it was attacked en route to Berlin and crashed at Lichtenberg, Germany. Malcolm would have been sitting in the glass cabin which is mounted outside the aircraft operating the guns.

The boy was reported missing, and the boy鈥檚 father wrote numerous letters inquiring about his son. He later learned the whole crew was destroyed over Germany.
